It had taken hours, but Crixizix had finally managed to dig a small tunnel down to Pivlic. The imp wasnât sure how he had lasted even that long except for his absolute determination not to die.
The goblin crawled forward slowly, with exaggerated caution, determined not to bring down the remains of the Imp Wing Hotel and Tavern on Pivlic. The imp appreciated the caution but would have appreciated speed a little more.
âHello,â Pivlic croaked. His throat was dry as sandpaper. âWhat brings you to the Imp Wing? Can I interest you in our special of the day, my friend? Imp paté. Real bargain.â
âGlad youâre still with us,â Crixizix said. âDonât waste your energy. Iâm going to get you out of here. I have teardrops, and thereâs a pair of ogres ready to pull this column off of you at my signal.â
âBut the townââ
âThe town is lost,â the goblin said sadly. âMany are dead, but most of the townsfolk were able to flee. They didnât seem too concerned with us. Too small, I think.â Something else even worse than the destruction of the township obviously troubled the goblin.
âWho wasnât too concerned?â Pivlic said. âHave the stone titans set upon us? Have the dragons returned?â
âYouâll probably remember soon. If not, Iâll fill you in as soon as youâre free.â
The goblin wriggled beneath the pillar, pulling a length of strong rope behind her. Crixizix reached around the imp to pass the rope under the column, blocking Pivlicâs line of sight with her tattooed forearm.
âThis wonât work,â Pivlic said, recalling the lokopede accident. â âdrops canât change the fact that Iâm crushed. If you pull off the column, I will die.â
âI said donât talk,â Crixizix said with gently chiding humor. The goblin was one of the more unusual members of the species Pivlic had ever met, possessed of a great deal of intelligence and a charming demeanor. The imp suspected she could make some Orzhov a fantastic agent if Crixizix ever chose to leave the Izzet. âSo I suppose youâre a doctor now too?â Crixizix continued. âBaron-regent wasnât enough for you? I told you Iâm getting you out of here. Donât you worry about a thing.â
âIs that what you told Kos?â Pivlic croaked. Pivlic hadnât called many people friend in both word and thought, but Kos had been one of them.
Crixizixâs gentle grin took on a sterner cast, but she said nothing.
âSorry,â the imp said. âGo ahead.â Crixizix nodded, and the grin returned.
The goblin released the rope and leaned back, allowing Pivlic to see the thick cord run past overhead, seemingly of its own volition. Crixizix leaned in close to Pivlicâs ear. âYouâre right. Your lower body is crushed, and in normal circumstances Iâd say it looks bad.â
âYou shouldnât go into nursing,â Pivlic rasped.
âMaybe not,â the goblin laughed hollowly, sounding less confident to the imp than she was putting on. Well, better false confidence than none at all, Pivlic reasoned. The imp saw the glint of reddish light from out of the corner of his eye, and heard the telltale clinking of teardrops.
